Are You Still Unemployed?
The claims are in and the numbers aren’t so hot.
The Labor Department has released weekly claims for unemployment benefits. This past week, the claims jumped up by 66,000. This brings us to a grand total of 374,000 unemployment claims.
Of course, the substantial increase is alarming, but there are some explanations. Of the 66,000 new claims, about 33,000 were from a computer problem in California. Another 15,000 are due to the government shut down.
The furloughed federal workers weren’t included in this week’s shutdown, but will probably be included in next weeks.
However, there still remain the 18,000 claims that aren’t explained. While the Labor Department suggests some may be due to the shutdown, others are attributing it to a failing economy.
What do you think can be done about rising unemployment?
