Loop on Location: 2013 NAACP Theatre Awards
The world’s biggest stage and screen stars celebrated black theatre in Beverly Hills.
The Saban Theatre in Beverly Hills has seen its fair share Hollywood elite, but the famed theatre got an extra dose of talent, style and glamour recently during the 2013 NAACP Theatre Awards.
Once just a small part of the Image Awards, the NAACP Theatre Awards, now in its 23rd year, has grown to be the premiere celebration of black performers and productions in the nation. Produced by the NAACP’s Beverly Hills branch, which is currently lead by President Ron Hasson, the NAACP’s theatre viewing committee attends more than 50 locally produced and touring equity productions to select the stand out nominees in categories ranging from lighting and costume design to outstanding ensemble and director.
The Walking Dead’s Danai Gurira landed one of the top honors of the evening, winning Best Equity Playwright for her production The Convert, while Vanessa L. Williams was honored with the Trailblazer Award for her stage, film and musical career. Loretta Devine received the Lifetime Achievement Award, while L.A. actress Diarra Kilpatrick walked away with the Best Female Lead for her role in the local production of In The Red & Brown Water.
