Top 3 Reality TV Meltdown Moments
Oh, how time flies and fights change
With "Basketball Wives," "Love & Hip-Hop," and "Real Housewives" taking reality TV to another level of violence, I've decided to reminisce on the top 3 moments in reality TV when meltdowns were still mini (in comparison).
1. "Making the Band" / Mysterious flips out when she doesn’t make the final cut
Mysterious was already pretty scary from the beginning of the show, but when the troubled Detroit native found out she didn’t make the band—shortly after finding out that her sister’s body was found in a dumpster—all hell broke loose. She went on a rampage in the streets of New York, punching walls, flipping garbage cans and breaking glass because her dream had seemingly slipped out of her hands. Her spaz-out was so ferocious that it almost seemed like she’d step out of the TV set and lay the smack down on you for watching. Despite how unstable she looked, it just showed how passionate she was about her craft. (Plus, she was in pain at the grizzly news of her sister so it was somewhat understandable.) In the end, she didn’t lose after all. How far did Da Band actually make it? She can do bad all by herself.

2. "Real World: Seattle" / Stephen slaps Irene
Stephen was an ambiguously gay man who constantly claimed that he was straight, but his behavior and mannerisms had his roommates giving him the side eye. In addition to that, he was generally very sensitive and his roommates always felt like they had to walk on eggshells around him because his personality was so manic. Now, let’s add Irene to the mix. Irene was bipolar, had Lyme Disease, and annoyed everyone in the house - especially Stephen. Eventually, Irene decided she no longer wanted to be on the show and went home, but not without some drama. Stephen called her fake right before she left so, in retaliation, she called him a homosexual. He then called her a bitch and retrieved a stuffed dog of hers (that he had hidden to be mean because she was so attached to it), tossed it into the river, ran up on the car she was in, opened the door and slapped her. She giggled and the car pulled off. At the time, this was probably one of the most scandalous things people had seen in terms of fighting on reality TV. Interestingly enough, Stephen eventually admitted that he was gay several years later.
3. "America's Next Top Model: Cycle 4" / Tyra spazzes on contestant Tiffany
Tyra Banks let the Inglewood out on a young model who had a tendency to self-sabotage herself (and her career). Tiffany, from Florida, was a hood girl from a rough background with big dreams who had struggled to be a part of the competition (her grandmother even sacrificed the light bill to buy her a bathing suit for the competition). She was pretty and had potential but she didn’t see it in herself. She often gave up so easily on challenges, but the final straw came after one test in which Tiffany had to read from a prompter. Tiffany actually read better than most of the girls in the competition but, once again, put herself down and Tyra went all the way off, “I was rooting for you! We were all rooting for you!” she shouted with tears in her eyes.
