Watch her confession below

Brandy will appear on VH1's Behind The Music on which the singer discusses her good girl image, her crossover appeal, her involvement in a fatal car crash, and her brief "marriage" to producer Robert Smith. (Note the quotation marks.)

When Brandy announced, back in 2002, that she was pregnant with her first child Sy'Rai, fans were left shocked because they hadn't known her to be dating anyone. Granted, the paparazzi and tabloids were not then what they are now, but the public remained surprised.

To soften the blow, Brandy claimed that she had married Smith a year before and the two seemed to be in marital bliss on the 4-part MTV docu-series "Special Delivery" that chronicled Brandy's pregnancy.

However, just a year after Sy'Rai's birth, the couple announced they had separated.

Later, Brandy admitted to Tyra Banks that the two had never even married. She said:

"I felt the need to lie about it because at the time I was 23 years old, I had this good girl image, this role model image and I was taught that you should be married before you have a child. I felt the pressure of what people would think and disappointing little girls. I felt responsible because young girls looked up to me and I didn’t want to disappoint them. I was afraid.”

In the preview for her "Behind the Music" special, Brandy admits that the lie began the downfall of her career.
