Can You Read This?
Looks like nearly 32 million Americans can't.
On the heels of International Literacy Day, it was reported that illiteracy rates haven’t changed much in the past 10 years.
32 million adults -- that’s 14% of the American population, 19% of high school graduates, and 21% of adults with a 5th grade reading level.
So what’s a 5th grade reading level anyway? Popular books for these readers are “Maniac Magee” by Jerry Spinelli and J.K. Rowling’s “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.”
On the bright side, some community heroes have arisen out of the report to combat illiteracy. Local libraries are promoting literacy providing volunteers who read at local schools. Also, Housing Works allows you to donate unwanted books which they distribute back to the community.
Are you surprised by the illiteracy rate?
