Minority Models, White Runways
What’s the racial make up at New York Fashion Week?
Jezebel studies have informed that white models still dominate the runway. Black and Asian models make up the same percentage, while Latina models are most grossly underrepresented at the Spring 2014 show.
Interestingly enough, the number of models that are women of color is actually on the rise. In fact, the number of white models on the runway decreased from 83% to 80%. The 3% change was distributed amongst the Black and Latina model unevenly. Similar to white models, Asian models experienced a decrease in representation.
Still, the industry’s Diversity Coalition is currently running a campaign to recruit more Black models, but is it enough?
What do you think needs to be done to increase diversity on the runway? Do the numbers surprise you?
