Where Have all the Black Baseball Players Gone?
Jackie R. would be quite displeased right now…
How many Black baseball players are there in the major league right now? Currently, only 8.5% of opening-day MLB players are Black or African-American. Compare that to the 19% in 1986!
Maybe it’s because the number of people needed to play the game (hey, one-on-one basketball is much easier to practice), or the amount of money required to participate in the game. Between the bats, balls, helmets, and bases (just to name a few), the price seems to add up rather quickly.
Also, baseball is a slow game compared to the others. Baseball requires hours upon hours of practicing in the cage, which also turns into a price blockade.
MLB is taking note though. The RBI (Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities), which was initially established in 1989, now reaches out to 200 cities.
What happened to all of the Black baseball players?
