Michelle Obama Smeared as Shopaholic

Right Wingers resorting to peddling tabloid rumors against First Lady.

In a recent National Enquirer article, Michelle Obama is accused of being an “out of control spender” — splurging $10 million in "taxpayer money" on ritzy vacations, wild shopping sprees and costly massages. The article also says that her husband is “furious,” but can’t curb her spending.

As reported by Media Matters, the tabloid report even raises questions about whether the First Lady has a drinking problem.

Unlike previously misguided attacks that centered around Obama’s advocacy work, including her efforts to reduce childhood obesity, the post this week has nothing to do with the First Lady’s policies.

London’s notoriously unreliable (and Obama-hating) The Daily Mail first put the National Enquirer story in play, quoting the tabloid’s unnamed sources who denounced the First Lady’s “disgusting” behavior saying, “The vacations are totally Michelle’s idea. She’s like a junkie.”

Other far-right blogs have since linked to the Daily Mail’s article, effectively hyping the National Enquirer’s gossip.
