The Most Expensive Celebrity Weddings
A look at the celebrities who have dropped the most dough on getting married
Kim Kardashian is not alone in spending the cost of the entire yearly budget of a small country on a wedding. Below a look at other celebrities who believe that when it comes to weddings, bigger is better.
Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries: The rumored price tag for the doomed union is believed to be in the neighborhood of $10 million. Of course few believe that Kardashian paid anywhere near that amount—if anything at all—thanks to generous gifts and discounts from brands looking to gain exposure from coverage of the reality tv extravaganza.
Paul McCartney and Heather Mills: In 2002 one of the most beloved figures in modern music married a woman who would soon become one of the most reviled. Paul McCartney’s wedding to Heather Mills reportedly cost around 3 million dollars. That figure pales in comparison to $50 million McCartney is said to have shelled out to Mills for a divorce six years later.
Prince William and Kate Middleton: What has already been dubbed the wedding of the century (at least so far), the wedding of Prince William, heir to the British throne, to college classmate Kate Middleton is believed to have cost more than $30 million. Much of the expense involved security, but two separate parties related to the affair are said to have cost more than half a million a piece.
Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer: At $5 million for the actual festivities, and over $100 million in today’s dollars if you calculate nationwide security costs, (according to ABC News) the wedding of Prince William’s parents remains one of the most expensive celebrity weddings on record. The bride’s dress alone cost more than $100,000.
Liza Minnelli and David Gest: Corralling and entertaining an audience full of celebs doesn’t come cheap. For her fourth wedding in 2002, Minnelli and groom David Gest are estimated to have spent $3.5 million dollars to mount an extravaganza attended by the likes of Elton John, Diane Sawyer and Elizabeth Taylor. Natalie Cole serenaded the couple with her hit “Unforgettable.” They divorced in 2007.
Grace Kelly and Prince Ranier: Imagine if Prince William married actress Scarlett Johansson, then you’d have the modern day equivalent of film star Grace Kelly’s 1956 marriage to Prince Rainier of Monaco. While the exact cost of the wedding has never been publicized, the security alone would have been in the millions (in today’s dollars) and additional expenses would have put the final price tag in the rang of tens of millions of dollars, beginning with a “dowry” of more than one million dollars paid by the bride’s father in advance of her wedding day.
Eddie Murphy and Nicole Mitchell: In 1993 Eddie Murphy was the king of comedy, as one of the world’s highest paid movie stars and he threw a wedding fit for a king. His wedding to runway model Nicole Mitchell took place at the famed Plaza Hotel and is believed to have cost $1.5 million dollars.
Donald Trump and Melania Knauss: Donald Trump doesn’t do anything understated, so his over the top third wedding, to model Melania Knauss was a surprise to no one. At the celeb studded the bride sported a dress featuring a 13-foot train, over 1,000 hand sewn crystals and pearls, and is believed to have cost over $100,000. The total cost is believed to have been over a million dollars—and that includes a few discounts the Donald is believed to have enjoyed for being a celebrity.
Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes: While the doubters continue to poke fun at the somewhat odd Hollywood duo, five years after their $2 million wedding at a castle in Italy, the pair appear to be going strong.
Elizabeth Taylor and Conrad “Nicky” Hilton: While the exact cost of their big day is unknown, we do know that Elizabeth Taylor’s very first wedding in 1950 cost a lot, because 100 cases of Dom Perignon, do not come cheap. Neither does having your wedding dress designed by an MGM costume designer. Taylor was a Hollywood princess and Hilton was, financially speaking, an American prince. Though he was the son of the founder of Hilton Hotels the couple’s lavish wedding reception was held at the famed Bel Air Hotel for an audience of 700, many of them Hollywood luminaries who had worked with Taylor or watched her grow up on set, including Ginger Rogers, Gene Kelly and Spencer Tracy. Taylor filed for divorce six months later and would go on to solidify her reputation as both a legend of film, and matrimony.
