Awards show will feature all-star tribute

After 20 years in the game, Snoop Dogg will be getting crowned with a BMI Icon Award this August, putting him in the same elite company as George Clinton, Carlos Santana, The Jacksons, James Brown, Isaac Hayes, Little Richard, Chuck Berry and his homie Willie Nelson.

The award will come as a part of the annual BMI Urban Awards, where the entertainment community gathers to celebrate the most-performed urban songs, songwriters and producers of the previous year. The evening will also include an all-star tribute to Snoop, where other artists will perform some of his biggest hits such as “Next Episode,” “Gin and Juice,” “Drop It Like It’s Hot,” “Beautiful,” “Sexual Eruption” and “Nuthin' But a "G" Thang" on August 26th at the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood.

This is a complete 360 for the rapper once considered one of the scariest men on the planet. By the time his debut album, Doggystyle, hit stores in 1993, Snoop Dogg was considered Suburbia Enemy  No. 1. It didn't help that he was involved in a high-profile murder case at the time either.

It's hard to even remember the days when Snoop's music and videos were protested against and almost banned by mainstream. From being "Stranded on Death Row" to the hall of fame, it's been quite a journey.
