Boy Scouts Rethink Ban On Gay Members
Diversity may have prompted an about-face on policy
That was quick…sort of. Last summer the Boy Scouts of America drew fire from LGBTQ and progressive groups for its ban on openly gay scouts and scout leaders. More than six months later, an intense boycott and shaming campaign appear to have prompted an about-face on the ban. Scouts and people close to the organization say leaders could not force local chapters to restrict membership to heterosexuals only. “The Boy Scouts would not, under any circumstances, dictate a position to units, members, or parents,” reads a statement from the organization. “This would mean there would no longer be any national policy regarding sexual orientation, and the chartered organizations that oversee and deliver Scouting would accept membership and select leaders consistent with each organization’s mission, principles, or religious beliefs.” Well, there you have it -- more positive change in America.
