Database invites visitors to input uncataloged burial sites around the country
Check this out! Sandra Arnold, a 50-year-old history student at Fordham University’s School of Professional and Continuing Studies has launched the Burial Database Project of Enslaved African Americans. It’s an online database that invites visitors to input information on the whereabouts and residents of slave graveyards around the country. Although others have attempted similar projects, Arnold’s is the only that takes a national approach to cataloging the burial sites, according to the New York Times. Arnold, who traces her ancestry to slaves in Tennessee, said previous efforts have always left her wanting. “The fact that they lie in these unmarked abandoned sites,” she says, “it’s almost like that they are kind of vanishing from the American consciousness.” (NY Times)
