Ballers: Star Trio in the WBNA Draft Announced
Brittney Griner picked first by the Phoneix Mercury in the WNBA draft.
Brittney Griner was selected as the No. 1 pick by the Phoenix Mercury in the WBNA draft Monday night in Bristol, Conn. The Baylor University grad finished the season with 3,283 points, making her the second-leading scorer in the women’s NCAA history. As the top shot-blocker ever, she had a record of 18 dunks. The 6-foot-8 athlete hopes to bring a big defensive presence to her new team.
"I hope I can be that defensive stopper down in the low post," Griner said in an interview with ESPN. "And bringing the dunking element of my game to Phoenix, just that excitement.”
University of Delaware's, Elena Delle Donne, was chosen by the Chicago Sky with the No. 2 pick. She finished her college career with 3,029 points. "I think this is a phenomenal team that I'll be joining; there are a lot of players who are going to be mentors to me," Delle Donne said in an interview with ESPN. "I felt like I was a really good puzzle piece for this team. You don't want to say where you want to go before [the draft], but Chicago was definitely my pick. I wanted to go there really badly."
The No. 3 pick was Notre Dame guard Skylar Diggins, who was taken by Tulsa. The athlete led the Fighting Irish to three Final Fours and two championship game appearances during her college career.
