Bringing Slavery to the Big Screen
Move over Django, a new historical drama is coming in.
Okay, so Django Unchained wasn’t actually a historical drama, but it still brought the drama. "12 Years a Slave" brings something to the big screen that other movies about slavery didn’t or couldn’t.
The new flick is being helmed as a true look into the nation’s horrific past. Depicting freed man, Northup, the movie follows his 1841 kidnapping and subsequent life as a slave.
"12 Years a Slave" is being reigned by critics for it’s emotional appeal, taking the audience through Northup’s confusion, violence, and bondage.
The film was most recently shown at Telluride and Toronto International Film Festival. Many critics are expecting the film to be an Oscar frontrunner. If so, filmmaker Steve McQueen would be the first Black filmmaker to receive the coveted award.
