Rap mogul says, 'we were like brothers'
Diddy and Rev. Al Sharpton are among the speakers at Heavy D's funeral set for Friday in New York.
In a statement, Diddy said he was “heartbroken by the passing of my dear friend.”
“He was a wonderful human being, who inspired and paved the way for a Hip Hop generation,” Diddy said. “We were like brothers — I will miss him more than words can express.”
Heavy D's funeral will be held at the historic Grace Baptist Church in Mount Vernon, New York.
BET also announced that the network will honor the 90s rapper at the Soul Train Awards, set to tape in Atlanta this weekend. The cable channel tapped Kurtis Blow, Naughty by Nature, Big Daddy Kane, Doug E. Fresh, DJ Eddie F, Whodini and Daddy-O of Stetsasonic to participate in the musical tribute.
Heavy D, born Dwight Arrington Myers, passed last week just outside of his home. He was 44.
The New York native was part of popular 90s hip hop group Heavy D. and the Boyz, who topped the charts with hits including “Now That We Found Love,” ”Who’s the Man” and “Somebody for Me.”
