Recreating the fitted and flirty look of the fashionable 'Mindy Lahiri'
It's been almost a decade since Mindy Kaling was hired in 2004 as the only female staff writer for a television series, that would later become the hit show "The Office." In the years since, she's directed a handful of episodes and been promoted to executive producer of the show, while also fulfilling her tertiary role on-screen as the boy-crazy Kelly Kapoor, a noted departure from her scene-stealing role as a heartbreaker in "The 40-Year-Old Virgin."
"The Office" is currently in its eighth and final season, but Kaling is far from on her way to being forgotten.
Her comedic memoir "Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns)" has become both a New York Times and Los Angeles Times bestseller, and FOX has decided to order a full season of her brand new (nearly eponymous) show, "The Mindy Project" (of which she is creator, writer, executive producer and star), after just two episodes. On "Mindy Project," Kaling plays the accomplished OB/GYN with the not-so-lucky love life, Mindy Lahiri.
While much of Kaling's comedy revolves around her figure—chapters of her book include "Chubby for Life" and "When You're Not Skinny, This is What People Want You to Wear"—her character definitely has no hang-ups about her shape. She'll wear a Hervé Léger's body-hugging Carmela bandage dress (seen in Photo 1 of the gallery above for $1,500) as quickly as she would a Wildfox Couture loose-fitting 'Seeing Stars' Lennon sweater ($218). Describe Mindy Lahiri's style: Eclectic chic, contemporary with a twist. It's about finding great pieces and putting them together with your own signature. Mindy's look is not about a brand or designer label; it's about how they are put together that makes them her signature look.
What are your favorite brands to use to transform Mindy? We are loving the C Wonder, Tracey Reese, Trina Turk, Kate Spade, Wildfox Couture and Lululemon for casual wear. Salvatore Ferragamo shoes and coats from ModCloth have been a big hit!
What's the inspiration behind Mindy Lahiri's look? She lives in Manhattan; it's a city about fashion. So she takes inspiration from the style of New Yorkers, but adds her own twist with color and accessories.
How can others emulate her look? Mindy's style is about silhouettes and fashion combos; it's not about labels. Fashion happens so fast right now and the designer labels are copied instantly: you can get knock-offs within the same season. Have fun with clothes. They are not tattoos that last forever. Be bold and experimental. Her signature pieces are a fitted blouse, great cardigan, and a flirty skirt. Find some pieces you like and mix and match to give it your own style.
