Can You Give Up Meat?
Even Jay and Bey are going vegan (albeit temporarily). Here's why you should curb your meat consumption.
Everyone from the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association and even Jay Z and Beyonce think you should skip that steak. Here's the mounting evidence:
Too much meat is terrible for your health
Yes, humans were evolved to eat meat, but you can eat too much. NPR reported that "people who ate daily servings of red meat increased their risks of developing certain cancers." The risk of colon cancer, for example, is doubled in people who eat the most red meat compared with people who eat the least. Science says that eating two to three servings a week is the best.
It goes without saying that eating consciously-raised animal products is the best way to go. Sure, I get that not everyone has access to Famers' Markets and a hamburger from McDonald's for less than a buck is much more enticing and less costly for many. However, that pink slime-patty you put into your body is not only bad for you, it's awful for the environment. Besides the cruel, inhumane ways that animals are slaughtered in factory farms, meat products are causing toxic waste, increased methane levels in the air, deforestation...the list goes on.
Humans are, unnaturally, moving up the food chain
In a new study, published in Scientific American, the rise in fat and meat consumption has pushed humans further up the food chain. Due to the rapidly growing economies in China and India, humans eat so much meat that we're now closer to predators like polar bears. This, of course, isn't good news for the planet because "producing meat has a larger impact on the environment than producing vegetables," TIME reports.
Jay Z and Beyonce go vegan
Hova announced on his blog that his and his superstar wife are forgoing all meat and animal-derived foods for 22 days. "On December 3rd, one day before my 44th birthday I will embark on a 22 Days challenge to go completely vegan, or as I prefer to call it, plant-based!!" Take inspiration from the rapper-mogul…you can give up meat, too. Jay continued, "This all began a few months back when a good friend and vegan challenged me to embrace a 'plant-based breakfast' every day. It was surprisingly easier on me than I thought."
