Fat People Don't Care About Losing Weight?
Weight control strategies come and go, evolve and evaporate, rekindle and reinvent, but researchers at Duke University may be onto something.
The new study regarding health risks due to obesity points out that are already fat don't care about losing weight.
Therefore, turning the focus to maintain current weight with simple health rules could be more effective.
Professor Gary Bennett worked with a group of 194 black women, ages 25 to 44, for 18 months. Half of the women were in a program for weight maintenance; the other half received typical weight loss counseling.
While black women who are overweight or slightly obese have lower risk of hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease, gaining weight increases risk majorly.
One year into the study, 62 percent of women in the weight maintenance program were at or below starting weight, compared to 45 percent in the normal care group.
