Surprising News for Bacon Lovers
Sorry gents, you might want to skip that BLT if you want stronger swimmers.
While popular culture suggests that bacon is the manliest food around, eating the stuff can ruin sperm quality, according to a study presented this week at the American Society for Reproductive Medicine’s 2013 Annual Meeting in Boston.
The research team studied the eating habits of 156 men who were undergoing IVF with their partners. The men were specifically asked how often they ate processed meat, white meat, red meat, white fish, tuna or salmon.
They found that men who consumed more than half a portion of processed meats such as bacon every day had significantly lower levels of healthy sperm compared to the men who ate less than half a portion of processed meats a day.
The researchers also discovered that some foods appeared to increase sperm quality. It appears the virile men eat more white fish.
“We found the effect of processed meat intake lowered quality and fish raised quality,” said lead researcher Dr. Myriam Afeiche.
No one is suggesting that bacon is the newest male contraceptive. The chairman of the British Fertility Society, Dr. Allen Pacey, expressed his beef with the tiny sample size.
“This may be a real effect,” Pacey said, “but the study is small and we know that accurately measuring sperm size and shape in the laboratory is fraught with error."
