Is There Such a Thing as Internet Addiction?
Apparently there is, and it almost cost one man his professorship, his wife, and even his life.
The country’s first inpatient treatment program has opened for Internet addiction at Bradford Regional Medical Center in Pennsylvania.
“The real problem is that most people laugh at you and don’t consider it a serious thing,” said Ryan Van Cleave.
He had been glued to the glowing screen, playing online games for as much as 80 hours weekly. Avoiding real-life friends for online ones, ignoring his wife—he was hooked on the Internet.
“I got so far into it,” he said. “I couldn’t realize how I got there.”
At the treatment center, addicts’ stays start with 72 hours of “digital detox” followed by a psychological evaluation.
Do you think you or someone you know could be addicted to the Internet?
