The theft of Apple products has increased 40 percent since last year, leading NYPD commissioner Ray Kelly to believe that the items are the main reason why crime rates in New York City have not dropped in 2012. "Overall crime is up 4 percent. In the absence of the Apple thefts, we would be experiencing a decline," Kelly said. There were 11,447 thefts of Apple products so far this year, an increase of 3,280 over the same period last year. In addition to the 'Find my Phone" application (which tracks the cell and makes it unusable if stolen), undercover officers will be soon be assigned to patrol the subways where the robberies happen to help reduce this growing crime problem.
