Are You Buying These Celebrity Endorsements?
Ads have stars like Beyonce drinking Pepsi and Shaq driving a Buick. Really?
Christmas arrived a little early for R&B pop diva Beyoncé when earlier this month she signed a $50 million deal to become a "global partner" with Pepsi.
The multi-year deal will fund commercials and print ads, as well as Beyoncé’s fee for supporting “the singer’s chosen creative projects.”
As the New York Times detailed:
"The campaign will coincide with a blitz of promotion for her next album, which has no title or release date so far, but is expected in 2013. Sometime after she performs at the Super Bowl halftime show on Feb. 3 (also sponsored by Pepsi), Beyoncé will appear in a new TV ad — her fifth for the soft drink since 2002 — and her face will be on a limited-edition line of soda cans.
The less conventional aspects of the deal are meant as collaborative projects that indulge Beyoncé’s creative whims, and might well have no explicit connection to Pepsi products. They are still at the brainstorm stage, but could include live events, videos, “a cool photo shoot” or almost anything else."
While Beyoncé fans, as expected, praised the move, there were also a few voices of dissent.
Huffington Post blogger Starre Vartan let it be known how she felt in post bluntly titled, "Beyoncé's Pepsi Deal Pisses Me Off: Here's Why." In it she says, "I do have a huge problem with a celebrity, especially one who is not only an idol for young people, but who has just had a child herself, promoting what we know to be one of the significant players in America's obesity problem." She also blasted the singer for participating in Michelle Obama's "Let's Move" campaign last year, only to turn around and push soda at the same kids going into 2013.
But she isn't the only one. Celebrities have been endorsing products that they might not even use for years; a few months back it looked like every celeb was hawking his or her own pre-paid debit card. But here are Beyoncé and a few others with some new products who stand out to us:
Pac-Man Drinks Henn Dogg?
Former boxing champ Manny Pacquiao's endorsement deal with Hennessy raised eyebrows the minute it was revealed. Really? A professional fighter, who has no off-season and has to stay in shape year-round, drinks Henny? Now that he just got "knocked the #@&% out" it looks like he might have been sipping the stuff after all.
Beyoncé Pushing Pepsi
Even with her Instagram and Tumblr, we still don't know much about the robot that is Beyoncé Knowles Carter. But, now we know that Pepsi is paying her top dollar just to stand next to her. Maybe it's the caffeine that helps her dance in heels.
LeBron Eats Mickey D's?
Have you seen how fast LeBron "King" James runs? Have you seen how high he jumps? Have you seen how people bounce off him when they try to get in his way? Well, it looks like he wants us to believe that it's those arm crunches from putting French fries in his mouth that has made him one of the top athletes in the world.
Jay-Z is a Bud
Not to say Budweiser isn't a good beer, because it is. But Hova drinks it? The same guy that used to sip Cristal and moved up to Ace of Spade? Budweiser has spent some big bucks to have Jigga appear in commercials, and even bankrolled his Made In America concert festival earlier this year. But good luck finding a photo of Jay actually knocking one back. We'll wait.
Shaq Pushes A Buick?
So let's get this right. Shaquille O'Neal, one of the most flamboyant personalities the sports world has ever seen. A man who used to customize all his cars with a Superman logo. A man who is newly divorced with money to blow -- drives a Buick LaCrosse? Yes, we laughed at that one too.
Dr. Dre Goes From Chronic To Chrysler
The good doctor is worth $260 million. A good piece of that was money Chrysler gave him to convince us that he actually drives one.
