UPDATE: Bishop Eddie Long's Wife Changes Mind, AGAIN
Its been a rough year for the embattled preacher
Vanessa Long, wife of Bishop Eddie Long, has officially filed for divorce.
"After a great deal of deliberation and prayer, I have decided to terminate my marriage to Bishop Eddie L. Long. Accordingly, I authorized my attorneys to file for divorce on December 1, 2011," Vanessa Long said via statement.
In a bit of irony, in that same, very public statement, she also asked for privacy.
"It is my sincere hope that this matter can be resolved expeditiously, harmoniously, and fairly. I ask that you respect my privacy and that of my family, as my attorneys and I have agreed that we will not try this case in the media, and I do not intend to make any further statements concerning this matter."
The divorce filings cap off a tumultuous 15 months for Long. Last September four young men accused him of coercing them into sexual relationships by showering them with gifts and lavish trips. Long dismissed the claims and later settled out of court with the defendants.
Long also found himself caught up in a lawsuit involving an investment scam where members of his church claimed to lose millions of dollars after investing in a company the Bishop highly endorsed.
UPDATE: The AJC has reported that Vanessa Long has withdrawn her petition for divorce. In a new statement she says, "Upon prayerful reflection, I have reconsidered and plan to withdraw my petition for divorce from my husband, Bishop Eddie L. Long," she said in an emailed statement bearing the New Birth logo. "I love my husband. I believe in him and admire his strength and courage."
UPDATE: The divorce is back on.
Stay tuned for details as they develop.
