Black Unemployment Dropped In September
Black teens also found work
Finally, a little good news for black people in this economy. The black unemployment rate dropped in the month of September, although not much.
Last month the rate dropped from 16.7% to a flat 16%. Black teens also found some work last month as the unemployment rate among them dipped two whole percentage points from 46.5% to 44.2%.
U.S. employers hired 103,000 more people in September, but even that uptick wasn't enough to make a dent in the national unemployment rate. It stayed at 9.1 for the third straight month.
Even though this is slightly good news, the harsh reality remains that companies are still discriminating against people who have been unemployed for long periods of time. Unfortunately that was one of the statistics that did increase. The rate for people unemployed for more than 27 weeks jumped from 43.1% to 46%.
