Taxi services stepping up to help pay for families funerals, other costs
The Bronx Zoo tragedy that claimed the lives of 4 adults and 3 children has saddened many New Yorkers and shown the generosity and compassion of many of its residents.
Several New York City cab companies have stepped up to donate money to the family that plunged 50 feet off the Bronx River Parkway when their car hit a curb and flipped over.
Elegance Car Service made the first donation of $1,000.
“Aside from the pain, it's going to cost a lot of money to bury seven people,” said Fernando Mateo, spokesman for the New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers.
“We estimate the cost may be upwards of $100,000 — and this family simply just doesn't have it. We can't imagine the pain,” he said. “This is not only sad for only the Dominican community, it’s sad for the entire City of New York.”
Livery cab driver Juan Rosario, whose wife and two young daughters were killed, was heartbroken.
