Yahoo chief executive calls telecommuters back to the office
At Yahoo! headquarters, there are parking lots and entire floors of cubicles nearly empty because some employees were working as little as possible in the office and or leaving early. Some are even running side startup businesses while they telecommute on Yahoo’s dime. Marissa Mayer, the company’s chief executive, recently announced she’d put a stop to that, out of a concern that working-from-home was negatively affecting the culture of innovation and collaboration at Yahoo. The decision sparked a national debate about workplace flexibility. But former and current Yahoo employees say Mayer’s decision should be seen as a solution for a problem specific to Yahoo. Mayer says her decision is not a “broad industry view on working from home.” But others, including Best Buy, are following suit. (New York Times)
