Businesses Band Together to Support Gay Marriage
3 months ago
Armani Exchange, eBAY, Google, and Groupon are among the companies to sign up.
Thirteen businesses have decided to make their support of gay marriage known, announcing the launch of the Business Coalition for DOMA Repeal this week. Under the help of the Human Rights Campaign, the group aims to abolish the Defense of Marriage Act, a 1996 law that defines marriage as between a man and a woman. Companies such as Armani Exchange, Aetna, eBay, and Marriott International have all signed up. Interestingly, former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is a board member for Marriott.
The coalition specifically supports the Respect for Marriage Act instead; it was first introduced in 2009. Repealing DOMA would extend more than 1,000 federal benefits to same-sex marriage couples. The Supreme Court is expected to review the constitutionality of DOMA for the first time in December. (CNN)
