Enrollment Up in Public Charter Schools

Significant numbers of newly enrolled public school students are at charters
The ranks of public charter schools are growing rapidly, according to a new report by the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools. Between the 2010-11 and 2011-12 school years, the number of students enrolled in charters increased by neatly 13 percent, or just over two million. According to the report, 110 schools district have at least 10 percent of student enrolled in public charter schools, up from 96 districts last year. “To the extent families are in need of other options, growth does indicate there is something missing in the public school system,” said Nina Rees, chief executive of the Alliance. Charter school opponents say they drain public resources from traditional schools, and attract motivated students from their lesser achieving peers. (New York Times)
