Cornell Univ. Suspends Frat Boys Over Racist "Trayvon" Taunts

Frat boys reportedly threw bottles at group of black students.

Cornell University has suspended their school's local chapter of Sigma Pi fraternity after an incident that allegedly involved racial taunts towards black students, the Ithaca Independent reports.

A group of black students had bottles hurled in their direction, called "Trayvon" and showered with other racial epithets this past weekend when they walked by the fraternity's house. The Trayvon Martin comment was a reference to the February shooting death of Florida teen Trayvon Martin.

Dean of Students of Kent Hubbell expressed shock and disappointment at the reported incident.

"I wish to convey our deep dismay and outrage with the incident that occurred at the Sigma Pi fraternity house this past weekend," said Hubbell, Wednesday. "It is important that all members of our community, and especially those of the Greek community, examine how we, as individuals and groups, may have contributed to a climate that would allow an incident like this to occur."

Members of the fraternity claim the individuals throwing bottles and heckling the black students were visitors and not members of the fraternity. Fraternity Chapter President Zach Smith said he will turn over the perpetrator's name to the police.

Sigma Pi Fraternity International has also suspended the Ithaca, New York affiliate pending an internal investigation. The fraternity's future at the school is also in question.

Just last year, the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity was kicked off the campus for five years after the hazing death of student George Desdunes.
