D.C. Gun Violence: 18-Year-Old Student Killed On the Way To School

Community shaken up by the second student death, less than a month into school year
A Tuesday morning ride to school might have played out normally for Markies Ross had he not driven past the body of his older brother, 18-year-old Marckel Norman Ross, who had been gunned down that morning on his way to Central High School in Prince George’s County, Maryland. “I can’t believe somebody would do this to him,” Markies later told the Washington Post. “He was a great person… Everybody loved him.” The 18-year-old was a junior at Central High, enjoyed running track and dabbled in the school’s fashion modeling club. Although Marckel hadn’t complained about any recent problems, he had been a victim of school bullying when he first moved to the school from another Maryland town in 2009, his mother told the Post. The D.C.-area community has been shaken by a number of slayings, including the death of Charles H. Flowers High School senior Amber Stanley, who was killed while she slept in her bed last month. Police have no leads in either case and have no reason to believe that either of the slayings are related incidents. (Washington Post)
