Doctors Insist Recess Is Just As Important as Math [study]

Pediatricians say breaks are needed in between tasks.
While the country is debating if guns are needed in American schools, a group of doctors feel that something else deserves priority.
According to a new policy statement published in the journal Pediatrics, pediatricians from the American Academy of Pediatrics say that recess is just as needed in schools as science and math.
"Children need to have downtime between complex cognitive challenges,” says Dr. Robert Murray, a pediatrician and professor of human nutrition at the Ohio State University who co-authored the statement. “They tend to be less able to process information the longer they are held to a task. It’s not enough to just switch from math to English. You actually have to take a break.”
Delaware, Virginia and Nebraska are only states who currently have recess periods.
