104 pimps were also arrested
The FBI is announcing that during a recent three-day sweep called "Operation Cross Country" they rescued 79 child sex slaves and arrested 104 pimps.
Some of the children were as young as 13, 12 and 11 years old. Two of them were boys, the rest girls.
The sweep was conducted in 57 cities across the country. Agents say that the children are usually lured through social media or with gifts.
"This is not just a problem on the other side of the world. It is happening in U.S. cities, and average people doing average things can help put an end to it," says Ernie Allen, President of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, mentioning that the FBI's hotline for cyber-crimes has handled 12,000 tips about child trafficking and prostitution.
Agents are equally concerned about what to do with the "rescued" slaves since many of them have no place to go after they have been released from police custody.
