Gay Marriage Advocates Look To Expand Momentum

Election Day victories in three states seen as launching pad for equality
The national gay rights movement won unprecedented victories on Election Day – putting the rights of a minority up to popular vote. Although a firewall of unpopularity remains in the South, advocates see the potential for legislative victories in Delaware; Hawaii; Illinois; Rhode Island; Minnesota, where a ban on gay marriage was defeated last week; and New Jersey. Public opinion certainly favors advocates’ optimism. “As the younger generation becomes a larger share of the electorate, the writing is on the way,” Michael Dimock, associate research director of the Pew Research Center in Washington, D.C., told the New York Times. Activists intend to speed up the shift in the near future, by employing a successful, but labor-intensive personal dialogue campaign. Currently, nine states and the District of Columbia have allowed same sex marriage. (NY Times)
