George Zimmerman Seeking Delay In His Trial

More time is needed to raise money for the defense, his attorney says
The clock is ticking for George Zimmerman, who seeks to delay the start of his trial for the shooting death of unarmed Florida teenager Trayvon Martin. On Wednesday, Zimmerman attorney Mark O’Mara said the defense team needs more time to raise money for the trial. They are seeking a delay of six months. Without a judge-granted delay, the trail is scheduled to start in June. “I think that we still need another $200,000 to $300,000,” O’Mara said. “There’s still a lot of investigation to do.” The balance of Zimmerman’s legal defense fund was under $5,000 this week, said O'Mara, who isn't being paid for his work. The team wants the money to hire four to seven more experts for the defense, according to a defense fund website. Prosecutors say Zimmerman profiled Martin, an African American, as the teenager walked back to where he was staying, in the gated community where Zimmerman was a volunteer neighborhood watch captain. He then shot the teen, after the two get into a physical fight. Zimmerman is expected to claim self-defense under Florida’s controversial Stand Your Ground law, which provides immunity to defendants with court-validated claims. (Reuters)
