How a Loop 21 reporter tracked down the man claiming to be the Florida shooter

It was a shot in the dark, but I knew if I was one of the first reporters to reach him via that address, I might be able to score a response and maybe some exclusive information.

At 5:46 pm, I received the below response, subject line "Confirmation" from an email account linked to the domain name.

I was dumbfounded (and to be honest, even more skeptical) that Zimmerman might have responded directly to my inquiry. The IP address from which the email was sent (the address itself has been redacted) is private. This response sparked a series of follow-up messages in which I attempted to coax hard confirmation out of the respondent:

Do you have anything to prove that the site is in fact run by you? Is your legal representation willing to issue a statement confirming the authenticity? If George Zimmerman has in fact created a website, it's major news. But, before reporting it, I'll need absolute confirmation of the authenticity.

What can you provide me to prove that this is, in fact, run by George Zimmerman?

I'm now seeing reports from NBC that your lawyers have confirmed that the site is indeed run and authorized by you. If that is the case, why have you decided to create a public site now? I understand that you have yet to speak publicly and probably won't say much, but I would love to hear any insight into your version of the events regarding the death of Trayvon Martin as well as about how much money you're hoping to raise via this site for your defense.

Would it be possible to speak with you briefly or to correspond via email?
