Health Alert: Gains In Life Expectancy Going To The Wealthy
2 months ago
Wealth disparities continue to have deep impact on public policy
It’s no secret that rich people have a higher life expectancy than middle class and impoverished families. But that disparity is growing, according to new research at the University of Washington. In fact, even though the nation’s life expectancy has trended steadily upward – it was up to 78.5 years in 2009 – multiple reports show the gains are going mostly to the upper end of the income ladder. Therein lies the problem with plans to raise the Social Security eligibility age. It’d be fine for the rich, not so good for the poor. Currently, Social Security benefits begin at 65 for Medicare and 67 for full living assistance. (Washington Post)
