Killing reignites debate over controversial self-defense law
Ron Davis, the father of 17-year-old black high school student Jordan Davis, who was gunned down by a white man in Florida after a dispute over loud music, is joining the crusade against guns and Florida’s controversial “Stand Your Ground” law. Although his son’s assailant, 45-year-old software developer Michael Dunn, hasn’t indicated that he will seek immunity under Florida’s self-defense statute, Davis believes the law gives Dunn a way out of a rightful prosecution for murder. Dunn has been charged with second-degree murder and has pled not guilty. Dunn told authorities he believed someone in Jordan Davis' car pointed a shotgun at him, during their encounter at a Jacksonville gas station. Police found no weapons of any kind. "The first goal is to get Stand Your Ground repealed because that law emboldens people to carry firearms and to use them if somebody looks at them sideways," Ron Davis said. His son’s case has been compared to that of Trayvon Martin, the young black Florida student, also 17, gunned down by a neighborhood watch captain who thought he looked suspicious. (Reuters)
