Health Alert: More African-Americans Urged to Become Organ Donors

Illinois' Secretary of State is asking more African-American to become organ donors. He is urging churches to get involved to help boost the level of organ donations in the state. Though African Americans account for 56 percent of those who need an organ transplant, only 32 percent make up donors. White points to mistrust from the community for their lack of involvement. “They will say that the organs will be sold, and here in this country of ours, we cannot sell organs,” White said. While 5.2 million people are registered as organ and tissue donors in Illinois, 300 die each year because they can’t get the organs they need. White has set up a new organ donation website, lifegoeson.com, where residents can sign up.
