Changes in the way citizens self-identify
The number of Americans that consider themselves to be multiracial grew faster from 2000 to 2010 than those who self-identify as a single race, according to a new U.S. Census Bureau report. Americans answering the 2010 Census race question could choose among white, black, American Indian/Alaska Native, several Asian options, several Pacific Islander options, and "some other race." Those identifying with multiple races grew by 32 percent over the decade, for a total of 9 million. Single-race identifiers grew by just 9.2 percent. Ninety-two percent of those who reported being multiracial checked just two races with those who identify as both black and white growing by 134 percent, those who identify as white and Asian soaring by 87 percent, and those who claim a black and Asian identity increasing by 74 percent. Among the rest, 7.5 percent identified with three races and less than 1 percent reported four or more races. (Huffington Post)
