Group urges renewed discussion and action on LGBTQ violence
Kendall Hampton, a 26-year-old Cincinnati gender non-conforming individual, was shot killed by an unknown suspect over the weekend, police officials said. Hampton, who police identified as a prostitute, was killed in the Walnut Hills area of the city. The Buckeye Region Anti-Violence Organization is calling the murder a hate crime and believes the victim was targeted because of the shooter’s perception of Hampton’s gender identity and expression. “We at BRAVO believe that this incident underscores the importance for renewed discussion and action on hate crime against LGBTQ communities,” said Gloria McCauley, executive director of BRAVO. In 2011, BRAVO documented 111 incidents of anti-LGBT hate crime in Ohio. Nationally, murder of transgender individuals are at an all time high, according to the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs. (BRAVO + FOX19)
