Is receiving treatment
Nelson Mandela is suffering from a recurring lung infection and is responding to treatment, according to South Africa's presidential spokesman Mac Maharaj. In January 2011, Mandela was admitted to a Johannesburg hospital for what turned out to be an acute respiratory infection. The 94-year-old anti-apartheid icon was hospitalized again Saturday at 1 Military Hospital near South Africa’s capital, Pretoria. Mandela has had a series of health problems in his life: he contracted tuberculosis during his years in prison; had surgery for an enlarged prostate gland in 1985; underwent seven weeks of radiation therapy for prostate cancer in 2001, ultimately beating the disease; and in February, had minor diagnostic surgery to determine the cause of an abdominal complaint.
