Will receive "high care" at home
Nelson Mandela was released from a South African hospital on Wednesday evening. The former South African president, 94, was being treated for a recurring lung infection. Last week, it was reported that he was 'recuperating' but then, as it was learned he had also underwent surgery to remove gallstones, it was likely he would spend Christmas in the hospital. Mac Maharaj, a spokesman for President Jacob Zuma, told said doctors were satisfied with Mandela's progress and that he will receive "high care" at his Johannesburg home. Mandela has had a series of health problems in his life: he contracted tuberculosis during his years in prison; had surgery for an enlarged prostate gland in 1985; underwent seven weeks of radiation therapy for prostate cancer in 2001, ultimately beating the disease; and in February, had minor diagnostic surgery to determine the cause of an abdominal complaint.
