Newark Mayor Cory Booker to Live on Food Stamps for a Week
Twitter beef turns into pledge to take "food stamp challenge"
After a dust-up on Twitter with a self-described Daughter of the American Revolution on Sunday night, Newark Mayor Cory Brewer will be going on the dole, purchasing his meals with food stamps for a week.
Daily Beast reports that on Sunday night Booker got into a debate over whether the government is responsible for making sure school kids get proper nutrition and responded by suggesting, “Lets you and I try to live on food stamps in New Jersey (high cost of living) and feed a family for a week or month. U game?”
The University of Bridgeport in Connecticut is already organizing a "food stamp challenge" for early December, so it offered to referee the challenge. The rules stipulate that participants must, "Avoid accepting free food from friends, family, or at work, including at receptions, briefings, or other events where food is served."
Via his Twitter account Monday afternoon, Booker requested that the institution provide him with a contact number so that he can receive further information.
