Town unable to handle the nonstop delivery of goods, donations
Elected officials in Newtown, Conn., are asking people to stop shipping and leaving gifts to the grief-stricken town following the deadly school shooting massacre. Officials on Wednesday, through an editor at The Newtown Bee newspaper, said they are grateful but can’t handle the donations deluge. They say the school supplies, artwork and other mementos have arrived in such numbers that they’ve been unable to process it all. Newtown official say they plan to process the “warehouses full of items” they’ve already received and then later inform the pubic of the best ways to help. The United Way of Western Connecticut announced Wednesday that a fund established to support the Newtown shooting victims has grown to $3.5 million. On Dec. 14, a lone gunman killed 20 schoolchildren and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Funerals for the victims took place all last week. (Associated Press)
