Health Alert: NYC Now Targeting Teens & Their Too-Loud Headphones

Turn it down!
New York City's Mayor Bloomberg is taking on another health initiative. Since banning public smoking, 16-oz. sodas, and trans fats in restaurants, Bloomberg is now targeting young people who listen to their music too loudly through their headphones. The city's Health Department plans to spend a quarter-million dollars to launch a Hearing Loss Prevention Media Campaign warning young people, through social media and focus groups, about the risk of losing their hearing when listening to personal music players at high volume. Its fundraising arm says it has already raised $70,000 in donations so far. According to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, excessive noise has caused permanent hearing damage in 1 in 8 children and teens. (NBC News)
