"Obama Will Pay Your Utility Bill": Online Scam Hits Detroit
Has "spread like wildfire"
Detroit residents have fallen victim to an online scam that promises President Obama will pay their utility bills, according to the Detroit News.
Instead, Social Security numbers and bank account information are stolen in the hoax.
At least 20 homeowners have been duped, according to Warren City Treasurer Carolyn Kurkowski Moceri.
She said, "There is no such federal program. If it looks too good to be true, it probably is."

Under the hoax, victims are contacted in person by scam artists through fliers, social media and text messages telling them Obama can provide credits or apply payments to their water, electric and heating bills in exchange for their Social Security number and a bank routing number.
Customers think they've paid their bills, but they haven't.
Moceri's department came across the scam earlier this week when reviewing online payments for water bills.
Since then, the state's Public Service Commission, which regulates the state's utility companies, and the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department have issued warnings.
