Files lawsuit against NCAA for "exploiting" the case
Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett filed a lawsuit against the NCAA on Wednesday demanding that Jerry Sandusky-related sanctions imposed on Penn State University be thrown out. Corbett called the penalties "overreaching and unlawful" and says they threaten the state's economy. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) fined Penn State $60 million for failing to stop the sexual abuse Sandusky, the former defensive coordinator, was convicted of in June (of 10 boys, over 15 years). The NCAA also voided the University's football victories for the past 14 seasons and banned its football team from bowl games for four years. Corbett claims the NCAA has "cynically and hypocritically exploited" the case, and believes stigma from the case would diminish recruitment of student athletes and the value of a Penn State education for decades. "I cannot and will not stand by and let it happen without a fight," Corbett said. (Reuters)
