Racist Cake Cutting of Naked Black Woman in Sweden Causes Stir [Video]
Swedish culture minister criticized for cutting cake of black woman
A Swedish minister of culture is under fire after photos of her cutting into a cake depicting a naked black woman sparked outrage.
Lena Adelsohn Liljeroth cut into the minstrel faced cake as onlookers laughed and cheered. The head of the cake was played by a male actor who screamed as each party-goer cut into the cake.
The party, which took place as a celebration of World Art Day, was officially started by the minister when she began cutting into the cake, according to the Swedish newspaper Fria Tilder.
While the minister's official public platform is anti-racism, many found this incident to be racist.
"Her participation, as she laughs, drinks, and eats cake, merely adds to the insult against people who suffer from racist taunts and against women affected by circumcision," Kitimbwa Sabuni, spokesperson for the National Afro-Swedish Association, said in a statement.
The art installation was meant to bring attention to the issue of female circumcision, which is a huge issue in many African countries.
According to the World Health Organization, about 140 million girls and women are living with the consequences of female genital mutilation, which has no health benefits and is generally carried out when girls are between infancy and 15-years-old.
