Report: NYPD Arrests One Student A Day, 68% Are Black

If you're young, blacks,school student, their us a large chance of you being arrested from July 1 to September 30. 68% of those students were black males and another 25% were Hispanic males. The New York Civil Liberties Union points out that Black only account for 29% of the summer school population.

“When students are treated as suspects, it discourages them from going to school and undermines the nurturing climate that is essential for learning,” NYCLU executive director Donna Lieberman said to the NY Daily News.

The NYCLU also infers that the rate could actually be higher, but the NYPD did not release statistical data from the regular school year as requested. 

School chancellor Dennis Walcott said that he would look into the lopsided arrest rate, but also noted that crime in NYC schools has been on the decline, almost 50%, over the past decade.
