Sex Addiction Not an Official Disorder, Says New Psych Manual
5 months ago
Don't believe the hype
"Sex addiction" will not be considered an official disorder, according to the American Psychiatric Association's newly revised Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. A person who has sex frequently does not qualify -- however, the proposed definition for "hypersexual disorder" included a person that showed symptoms like relentless sexual urges that feel out of their control, excessive sexual activities, frequent usage of sex to cope with stress, and interference of sexual activities in day-to-day life functioning as suffering from the disorder. Rory Reid, the lead researcher of the study, said of those who might be categorized: "They might choose sex even in situations where such choices might cause significant problems or harm, such as job loss, relationship problems or financial difficulties." The study only included people who were already seeking help for a mental condition, so it still remains unclear if the criteria would apply in diagnosing people in the general population.
